Overcoming Life-Threatening and Life-Changing Injuries
Officer Shaouni recalls the moment she was shot during an attempted drug-related arrest: “I was shot multiple times. He shot my partner multiple times. I got to a point of cover, and he comes around, he shoots me in my left arm. My left arm gets shattered and is just hanging next to me. He then walks up close to me, points the gun at my head and pulls the trigger. He missed.”
Getting back on the saddle isn’t easy after extreme trauma, but Officer Shaouni doesn’t have “quit” in her vocabulary. Instead, she went through five surgeries and months of excruciating physical recovery. To ensure her nerves and policing skills are up to snuff, she trained at Decision Tactical. Officer Shaouni ran through revolutionary training environments that immersed herself in challenging, potentially triggering scenarios. Some required de-escalation and others required the use of force. All required poise, focus and nerves of steel.

For Shaouni, this training isn’t just about sharpening her skills—it’s about helping others, too. “I think it’s very important to have these scenarios and run through these types of things. I now get to talk to academy classes about it, talk about critical incidents. The day that you stop learning, you need to change what you’re doing.”
